This also brings the UAE one step closer to its net zero target by 2025 RIYADH: UAE based nuclear energy company The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, or ENEC, has announced the commencement of commercial operations of Unit 2 at the first power station located at the Arabian Peninsula Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, according to a statement. The commencement of Unit 2 reflects the transformative effect of nuclear energy on the UAE’s clean energy transition journey. "As many nations around the globe recognise the essential role of nuclear energy as part of a diversified energy mix, the UAE offers a case study on the successful delivery of new-build nuclear," WAM reported, citing Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ENEC. Combined, Unit 1 and 2 will be producing a total of 2,800 MW. This falls in line with the Barakah plant’s goal of providing 25 percent of the Gulf country’s electricity requirements via clean electricity while decarbonizing the Nation’s power sector simultaneously. It also brings the UAE one step closer to its net zero target by 2025. “We are committed to efficient and reliable power generation to ensure homes, business and industry across the UAE have continuous access to clean baseload electricity and will do so for the coming 60 years ahead,” the statement said, citing Nasser Al Nasseri, the CEO of ENEC’s subsidiary. The subsidiary, Barakah One Company, is in charge of representing the financial and commercial interests of the Barakah Plant project.
