UN Security Council welcomes peaceful transfer of power in Yemen

The UN Security Council (UNSC) members welcomed the announcement of the peaceful transfer of the power of the legitimate Yemeni government by President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi to the Presidential Leadership Council of the Yemeni government. In a press release on Yemen, the UNSC expressed hope that this would constitute an important step towards stability and a comprehensive Yemeni-led political settlement under the auspices of the UN, after the start of the armistice on April 2. The UNSC also welcomed the $3 billion economic support package announced by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and the Kingdom"s additional commitment of $300 million to fund the UN Humanitarian Response Plan, praising as well the GCC"s contribution to supporting peace, and promoting political dialogue. The UNSC welcomed addressing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, vowing the Council’s full support for the Legislative Council of the Yemeni government in meeting the urgent humanitarian and economic needs of the Yemeni people. In Warsaw, the Republic of Poland too welcomed the announcement of the formation of the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen and the transfer of power to the Council. In a statement Wednesday, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed Poland"s support for the council and its efforts to bring about peace in Yemen and fulfill the requirements of the transitional period in the country. In Islamabad, Pakistan said it welcomed the decision issued by Yemeni President Hadi to form the Presidential Leadership Council and delegating it full powers of the president of the republic. It praising the success of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting that hosted the Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue in Riyadh and the truce announcement in Yemen by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, noted that Pakistan considers establishing the council an important step on the right track, which will help enhance efforts to reach the comprehensive political solution for the Yemeni crisis. The ministry also stressed that Pakistan fully supports the initiatives of GCC and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a peaceful settlement for the conflict in Yemen, urging all parties of the Yemeni conflict to get engaged in a constructive dialogue to end hostilities and ensure the regional peace and stability. — SPA
