BERLIN — The German government said Friday it wouldn"t block a European Union (EU) embargo on Russian oil due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, despite relevant serious reflections. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a statement that his country wouldn"t oppose an EU ban on Russian oil, but voiced skepticism that it’s the most effective means of damaging Russian President Vladimir Putin. He cautioned that halting Russian oil imports would cause serious pain to Europe"s biggest economy, including supply shortages and enormous price increases. "But we will no longer experience a national catastrophe. We have made a lot of progress on oil and could join an embargo if it happened. Germany is not standing in the way of it." Germany relies on Russian oil supplies by 30 percent of its needs, gas by 55 percent and coal by 50 percent. — Agencies
