JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority has stated that the corrective period has expired for some provisions regulating the activity of transporting goods, freight brokers, and renting trucks, which were approved and published on Jan. 2, 2020, noting that licensed individuals and facilities must now not use trucks manufactured over 20 years ago. The authority pointed out that the period for licensed goods transport facilities to meet the requirement to provide a minimum of 10 individual transport vehicles or locomotives has been extended, to a maximum period of three years, provided that at least two vehicles are added annually until the required minimum is completed. Licensed facilities must adhere to the operational age of the truck, which will contribute to enhancing traffic safety, without requiring a specific nationality for the driver, provided that the Saudization percentage specified by the Ministry of Human Resources is respected. The authority further noted that trucks should only be driven by their owners, or whoever they authorize as an assistant driver, with the appropriate license to drive the truck. This comes within the Transport General Authority’s efforts to organize and develop the activity of transporting goods and to ensure the availability of transport services at higher levels of quality and safety. These efforts will also contribute to raising the efficiency and competitiveness of transport, and to achieving strategic goals to preserve the environment, reduce carbon emissions and pollution, reduce fuel consumption, and lower operating and maintenance costs. The authority urges all those wishing to browse the bylaws and regulations to visit the website www.tga.gov.sa or call 19929 for more information.
