RIYADH: Mosques in the Saudi port city of Jazan are being restored to their former glory as part of the second phase of a major redevelopment project instigated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The scheme to revamp historic places of worship throughout the Kingdom will see mosques returned, where possible, to their original architectural state using modern construction methods. Jazan mosques are known for their unique characteristics and religious importance, linking the past with the present. Meanwhile, the second phase of the project has got underway in Al-Jouf. Each building will first be assessed to determine the extent of repair and reconstruction work required internally and externally. One of the mosques earmarked for restoration in Al-Jouf is Al-Saidan Mosque, one of the most important for its historical value and as a local landmark in Dumat Al-Jandal. Built around A.D. 1223 it is one of the oldest mosques in the city after Omar bin Al-Khattab Mosque.
