Pakistan"s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been shot and wounded in the leg on Thursday when unidentified gunmen fired during a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad in Pakistan’s Punjab province. According to local media, Khan is out of danger. Imran Khan was leading a protest march to Islamabad to demand snap elections. A senior aide told AFP news agency it was "an attempt to kill him", but police are yet to confirm that he was the target. Chaotic scenes broke out near Imran Khan"s reception camp at Allahwala Chowk in Gujranwala after gunshots were fired, reported local channel Geo News. It said several people were injured in the incident that took place, about 200 km from Islamabad. Members of his PTI party said another four people were hurt in the shooting. Khan, 70, was leading the march on the capital Islamabad to demand snap elections after he was ousted in April. The former prime minister was seen being taken to a hospital in Lahore. A party spokesman said he had been hit in the shin. Another party leader, provincial Health Minister Yasmeen Rashid said Khan was in stable condition. A male suspect was later arrested, according to Pakistan"s Geo TV. An aide of Imran Khan says that a gunman fired six shots at the container-mounted-truck carrying the former Pakistan Prime Minister. Imran Khan is being treated at a hospital in Lahore and is now out of danger. Last month, Pakistan’s election commission disqualified Khan from holding public office in a case described by the former star cricketer as politically motivated. He had been accused of incorrectly declaring details of gifts from foreign dignitaries and proceeds from their alleged sale. — Agencies
