Government in Indian capital New Delhi announced on Friday closing down of primary schools for an indefinite period from Saturday as the air quality reached alarming level. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said at a press conference: "Primary classes will be closed from tomorrow and outdoor activities for classes above the fifth standard will be suspended." Data from the Central Pollution Control Board in India showed that Air Quality Index of Delhi stood at 445 at 2 PM today which is considered severe and can affect even the healthy people and may have serious health issues for chronic patients. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had asked the Delhi government to close down schools in wake of deteriorating air quality and increasing breathing problems. Many schools in the capital and neighboring areas have taken measures to protect children including holding online classes, suspension of outdoor activities and introduction of breathing exercises in classes. Delhi is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world according to several studies on global air quality. The deteriorating air quality is attributed to recently concluded Diwali which was celebrated with fireworks, industrial and vehicular pollution, construction related pollution and burning of stubbles in neighboring states. In the past few years, around November, Delhi had closed down schools, prevented entry of heavy vehicles, suspended industrial and construction activities, banned burning of rubbles and put a ban on fireworks in a desperate bid to improve the air quality. — Agencies
