Strasbourg, Rabi'II 6, 1435, Feb 6, 2014, SPA -- The European Parliament dug in its heels Thursday in a showdown with EU governments over a new scheme to wind down troubled banks in the eurozone, demanding changes to the much-heralded measure, dpa reported. The new set-up, which is meant to help shield taxpayers from bank bailouts, would be part of a crisis-thwarting banking union, considered key to restoring trust in the eurozone. EU finance ministers hammered out a compromise on the scheme in December, but an agreement now has to be struck with the European Parliament, which is unhappy about the ministers' approach. The legislature shored up its tough position Thursday with a plenary endorsement. Its negotiating mandate was confirmed in a 441-141 vote. -- SPA 20:18 LOCAL TIME 17:18 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1196008
