New Delhi, Rabi'II 2, 1434, Feb 12, 2013, SPA - Police shot dead at least 11 people during protests against local elections in India's north-eastern state of Assam on Tuesday, officials said. All the victims belonged to the Rabha tribe in strife-torn areas of the Goalpara district, situated 130 kilometres west of state capital Guwahati, according to a report of DPA. State Home Secretary GD Tripathy said five people were killed in separate incidents when police fired at mobs attacking polling officials conducting village council elections. Six more were shot and killed during clashes elsewhere in the district later Tuesday, local police officials confirmed. "Police had to retaliate to protect the lives of polling personnel. We have rushed in additional army and security forces in affected areas," Tripathy said. The Rabha tribe has been opposing the elections, demanding that polls for their own regional autonomous council in Goalpara be held first. --SPA 13:57 LOCAL TIME 10:57 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1077742
