United Nations, Shawwal 20, 1431, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday agreed to send additional peacekeepers to Ivory Coast ahead of elections planned for next month and urged the Ivorians not to postpone the vote for a seventh time. The council decided to send up to 500 additional peacekeepers to Ivory Coast for no longer than six months to reinforce the 8,500 troops already deployed in the West African nation. "The members of the Security Council urge the Ivorian stakeholders to meet their commitments to organize the first round of elections on October 31, 2010 as agreed by all parties," the 15-nation council said in a statement. "They further stressed the need for the parties to ensure calm prior to, during and after the vote," it said. Voting is scheduled for October 31, but six dates have already been missed in the past five years because of disputes over the identity of voters and the disarmament of rebel groups. A final voter list containing 5.7 million names was agreed on by Ivorian parties on September 06, 2010, and adopted by a presidential decree three days later. --SPA 11:22 LOCAL TIME 08:22 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/821664
