UNITED NATIONS, March 04, SPA – Israel fired rifle shots into Lebanon on Tuesday morning but there were no injuries, the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon reported. The shots hit a wall with an anti-Israeli slogan painted on it, Associated Press reported. U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe called it "a serious incident" and a violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended the 34-day Israeli-Hezbollah war. The Israeli military said Tuesday's shots were fired by accident and the incident would be investigated. A Lebanese army statement said an Israeli patrol fired toward the Lebanese side near the village of El Adeisse. The statement said five bullets hit a wall about 20 meters inside Lebanon. Preliminary findings from a visit to the site by a U.N. investigation team said at least two rifle shots hit the wall near the U.N.-drawn Blue Line along the Israeli-Lebanese border. The U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as UNIFIL, "has protested to the Israel Defense Force," Okabe said. The UNIFIL commander has been in contact with senior commanders of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Force, she said.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/640861
