UNITED NATIONS, January 24, SPA -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said the lesson he learned from the war on Gaza is that a just and lasting peace between Israel and "all" its Arab neighbours must be achieved. "This conflict made clear that we must address the political failure to bring about lasting peace and stability. I am more determined than ever to contribute to the goal of ending the occupation that began in 1967," Ban told a ceremony on Friday for the handover of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China from Antigua and Barbuda to Sudan, according to a report of Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). Ending the occupation, he explained, means "achieving the establishment of a Palestinian state to co-exist in peace and security alongside Israel, and realizing a just, lasting and comprehensive peace between Israel and all her Arab neighbours." Offering Sudan his "best wishes for the year ahead," Ban said "I sincerely hope that Sudan's leadership of the Group of 77 and China will accelerate efforts to find an acceptable resolution" of this and other conflicts worldwide."Without your cooperation, we cannot hope to make headway on these and other common challenges. More than ever, the UN needs the support and participation of the Group of 77 and China," he said addressing the group.--MORE www.spa.gov.sa/628943
