New York, April 12, SPA -- The five veto powers on the UN Security Council and Japan Saturday reached an agreement on a draft declaration thatwould verbally condemn North Korea for its provocative firing of amissile last week, DPA reported. But it fell short of the full resolution that Japan, whoseterritory was overflown by the missile, and the United States haddemanded. The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, accepted the proposal, saying it was a strong and legally binding motion of the SecurityCouncil which would fulfill all of Washington's goals. The document is to be put before the 15-member council for a voteon Monday, a spokesman for the US mission said. In the proposal, the council would find that North Korea's firingof the missile violated a 2006 UN resolution. The panel would condemnthe action and demand that no further such tests are carried out. A declaration must be adopted by consensus, and is a milder formof reaction compared to a resolution.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/653624
