United Nations, Dec 17, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution allowing states to go ashore in Somalia to combat piracy. The resolution provides authority for one year for nations with permission from Somalia's government to use “all necessary measures” by land or air to stop anyone using Somali territory to plan, help, or carry out acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea.“We must be mindful that piracy is a symptom of the state of anarchy which has persisted in that country for over 17 years. This lawlessness constitutes a serious threat to regional stability and international peace and security,” U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the council. The resolution was adopted on the same day it was reported that pirates operating off the coast of Somalia had seized two more ships.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/617034
