LONDON, Aug 31, SPA -- European countries should adopt a unitedenergy policy to avoid becoming too dependent on Russia,AP quoted British Prime Minister Gordon Brown as saying in an articlepublished Sunday. Brown said European Union nations should «use ourcollective bargaining power rather than seek separateenergy deals with Russia.» «Without urgent action we risk sleepwalking into anenergy dependance on less stable or reliable partners,»Brown wrote in The Observer newspaper. Russia suppliesthe EU with about a third of its oil and about two-fifthsof its natural gas, and can literally turn off the tap ifit chooses. Brown said Europe should turn to other oil and gassuppliers and consider a pipeline to take gas from theCaspian Sea through Turkey, «reducing our dependence onRussia.» Brown said he spoke to Russian President Dmitry Medvedevby telephone Saturday, and told the Russian leader «toexpect a determined European response» to the crisis. The 27 EU leaders are due to meet Monday in Brussels todiscuss how to respond to the war, and to Russia'ssubsequent recognition of the independence of two breakawayregions of Georgia. Brown said the EU should review «root and branch» itsrelationship with Russia. He said «there can be no returnto 'business as usual' until Russia commits fully toGeorgia's territorial integrity and withdraws to itsprevious positions.» --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/586294
