United Nations, Jan 8, SPA -- The top United Nations official in Gaza has rejected claims by Israel that militants were firing mortars from a U.N. school that was shelled by the Israeli military yesterday in an attack that killed 43 people and wounded scores. “I was reassured by the management of the school, my own staff, senior, experienced, long-serving staff, that there were no militants in the school,” John Ging said to reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York via video link from Gaza.“I am very confident now that there was no militant activity inside the school nor militants in the school,” Ging said, reiterating his call on Tuesday for an independent investigation.“If anybody has evidence to the contrary, then let’s bring it forward,” Ging said.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/623922
