6 killed in South Korean arson, stabbing spree

SEOUL, South Korea, October 20, SPA -- A financially strapped SouthKorean man went on an arson and stabbing rampage in Seoulon Monday, leaving six people dead and seven otherswounded, police said. The 31-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname,Jeong, first set fire to his room in a low-cost lodgingfacility in southern Seoul and then stabbed other residentswith a knife while fleeing the fire, police was quoted as saying by Associated Press. Five people were stabbed to death and another died afterjumping out of a window to escape the blaze, police said. Seven others were wounded, including four seriously, andthe death toll could rise, according to police. The suspect, arrested at the scene, told police he did notwant to live because «everybody looks down on me,» KimKap-shik, chief detective at Seoul's Gangnam PoliceStation, told reporters. Jeong's «livelihood was difficult and (he) has been underconsiderable financial pressure,» the investigator toldreporters.
