Washington, September 11, SPA -- Canada’s Prime Minister on Wednesday pledged that Canadian forces would not renew their military mission in Afghanistan past 2011. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canadians do not want to keep troops in Afghanistan beyond then, and that 10 years of fighting is enough. “You have to put an end date on these things,” he told reporters in Toronto. “We intend to end it.” “I think we have to say to the government of Afghanistan, ‘We have an expectation you are going to be responsible for your own security’,” Harper said, adding that it is not a realistic goal to eradicate the insurgency by 2011. Canada has 2,500 soldiers in the southern province of Kandahar, and Harper’s minority Conservative government reached a compromise agreement in March with opposition parties to end the mission there by 2011, the Associated Press reported.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/589208
