ASEAN Chief calls for restrain in Thai-Cambodian border Dispute

Singapore, July 20, SPA -- ASEAN Chief Surin Pitsuwan has called for"maximum restraint" in the border dispute between Cambodia andThailand, while Cambodia has asked for UN intervention, news reportssaid Sunday. Nearly 1,000 Cambodian troops and more than 500 Thai soldierscontinue to face each other on the disputed territory, according to a report of DPA. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of the Association of South-EastAsian Nations (ASEAN) urged ministers from the two countries to talk; DPA quoted The Sunday Times as saying. They are set to attend the 41st ASEAN ministerial meeting startinglate Sunday in Singapore. "The ministers may wish to address the issue... trying toencourage early resolution and maximum restraint, in order to avoidany repercussion on the image of the organization," Surin said. Cambodia reportedly wants the UN to intervene. The tense confrontation comes just as ASEAN foreign ministers areplanning to discuss further integration and cooperation. Referring to a possible bilateral meeting between Thai andCambodia ministers, Surin said, "I think the ministers certainly willdiscuss the issue and try to encourage reconciliation as soon aspossible."--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/575223
