Spaniards mourn death of Socialist killed by Basque separatist

MADRID, March 08 , SPA -- Spaniards mourned the death of asmall-town Socialist politician in a shooting blamed on theBasque separatist group ETA, transforming what was supposedto be a quiet day of reflection before Sunday's generalelection into a day of grief, AP reported. Carrasco was shot three times in his car as he prepared togo to his job as a clerk in a highway toll booth. OnSaturday, colleagues decorated it with a bouquet offlowers, candles and a black sash. A wake for the 42-year-old father of three, was being heldSaturday at the town hall in Mondragon, and the funeral wastaking place in the evening his funeral. Like many Basquetowns, it has two names: Mondragon in Spanish and Arrasatein the Basque language. On Saturday morning mainly local politicians stopped by topay their respects. Other people tended to stay away. The shooting prompted Spain's political parties to calloff the remainder of their rallies leading up to Fridaymidnight, when the campaign was to come to an official end.
