BAGHDAD, May 03, SPA -- U.S. soldiers killed eight suspected militants and an American soldier was killed in a roadside bomb attack in the latest clashes in Baghdad, the military said Saturday. More than 100 people were wounded in clashes Friday andSaturday in Baghdad's embattled Sadr City district, Iraqihealth officials said Saturday. A U.S. helicopter on Saturday allegedly fired a missile ata target some 50 meters away (yards) from the generalhospital in Sadr City, wounding about 28 people anddamaging at least seven ambulances, hospital officialssaid. The U.S. military had no immediate comment about theincident but said they «only engage hostile threats andtake every precaution to protect innocent civilians.» The insurgents are known to have operated in a buildingnext to the hospital. The attack left a crater just outside the concretebarriers of the hospital and badly damaged at least oneambulance along with some other vehicles, AP TelevisionNews footage showed. The explosion apparently demolished abrick building. The American military also announced Saturday that a U.S. soldier died of wounds sustained in a roadside bomb thatstruck the soldier's vehicle during a combat patrol ineastern Baghdad on Friday.
