5 Indian soldiers killed in rebel ambush

SRINAGAR, India, June 14, SPA -- Insurgents ambushed an army vehicle and killed five Indian soldiers including twosenior officers in Indian-controlled Kashmir, an armySpokesman said Saturday. The insurgents sprayed bullets at the vehicle carrying Lt. Col. Ajay Verma and Maj Santosh Kumar Singh, a driver andtwo armed guards on a mountainous road on Friday evening,killing all of them on the spot, said Lt. Col. ShantanuDass Goswami, an Indian army spokesman. The officers had gone for road reconnaissance and werereturning to their base when they were ambushed, he said,adding the rebels escaped with two assault rifles. The attack occurred near Simthan, a village 100 miles (160kilometers) southeast of Srinagar, the main city in India'sJammu and Kashmir state, the Associated Press reported.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/564989
