Somali president escapes mortar attack on airport

MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 01, SPA -- Somali officials say insurgents fired mortars at the Mogadishu airport as aplane carrying President Abdullahi Yusuf was about to takeoff. Yusuf was unharmed although two people were slightlyinjured, they say. Associated Press quoted Presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamed Mohamud as saying that Sunday's attack was not an assassination attempt. The insurgents «tried to disrupt the president's departure to Djibouti but they failed. » The U.N. Security Council is set to meet Yusuf inneighboring Djibouti Monday as part of its six-nation tripto promote peace in Africa. Immigration official Halane Ahmed Asir says two mortarshit the runaway some distance away from the president'splane.
