Kathmandu, Dec 6, SPA -- The European Union Thursday urged Nepal to holdearly elections for a constituent assembly, calling it essential forthe peace process to succeed, reported dpa. The EU delegation expressed concern over repeated delays inchoosing the assembly, which would draft a new constitution anddecide on the future of monarchy. "Early elections and a mandate from the people are an essentialcomponent of the peace process," delegation chief Pedro Moitinho deAlmeida said. "Repeated postponement of the elections erodes the credibility andaffects the process of democratic transformation," he said. The EU also called for improved security across the country andpressed the central government to hold talks with marginalizedcommunities to boost the peace process. "There is a need to rebuild public confidence in the police andsupport them to tackle the problems," Moitinho de Almeida said. He also said any decision by the Nepalese people on the future ofthe monarchy would be acceptable to the EU as long as it was carriedout in a democratic manner.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/506713
