Washington, December 22, SPA -- The top United Nations political officer called Friday for Israelis and Palestinians to take confidence-building measures in support of a revitalized peace process. “Solid progress will be essential in the bilateral negotiations,” Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe told the Security Council. “This however is unlikely to be achieved, or to be sustainable, without serious improvements on the ground. Donors must follow through on their commendable Paris commitments, and the parties must act to fulfill their responsibilities, so that a new climate of confidence, security and physical mobility is established,” he said. The latest push for peace builds on a one-day meeting in Annapolis, Maryland and a Paris donor’s conference, which the Security Council welcomed in a Friday press statement.--MORE www.spa.gov.sa/511422
