Al Gore in Norway to accept Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO, Dec 7, SPA -- Former U.S. Vice President Al Gorearrived in Oslo on Friday to accept the Nobel Peace Prizehe shared for the campaign against global warming, andshunned the traditional airport motorcade in favor ofclimate saving public transport, reported ap. Gore will accept the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize he shared withthe U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at aceremony in the Norwegian capital on Monday. Upon arrivingin Oslo, Gore urged governments meeting in Indonesia onways to curb climate gasses «to promptly produce a strongmandate.» The governments meeting in Bali, Indonesia, hope to finishdrafting a new climate treaty by 2009, with a currenttarget of 2012 for countries to ratify it. Gore said he hoped they would move the date for asuccessor to the Kyoto treaty ahead by two years «so wedon't have to wait until 2012» to have a tougher climateagreement in place. Before his arrival with his wife Tipper, Gore informed hishosts that he would not need the traditional motorcade fromthe airport, preferring to take the high-speed andenvironmentally friendly airport train and then walking tohis downtown Oslo hotel. «I use public transport when I can. It isn't alwayspossible,» Gore told The Associated Press while walking upOslo's main street to his hotel. He said the train was muchfaster than a limousine, but that it was also a symbol ofefforts to reduce pollution in hopes of slowing climatechange. «It is a gesture. It is also one of the changes we areall going to have to be doing anyway,» Gore said about theneed to change travel habits. Gore has campaigned worldwide to draw attention to climatechange, which led to the Oscar-winning documentary abouthis efforts called «An Inconvenient Truth.» He shared thepeace prize with a U.N. panel of scientists who reported onclimate change since 1990. The laureate said arriving in Oslo to accept the Nobelprize was an emotional experience. He said he would use thetime before the start of his official Nobel itinerary, anews conference on Sunday, partly to go sightseeing withhis family. The sightseeing started as Gore walked to his hotel withhis arm around his wife, and Nobel peace prize committeesecretary Geir Lundestad acting as tour guide. At onepoint, Lundestad pointed out the Nobel Peace Prize bannerslining both sides of the street. Gore and Rajendra Pachauri, who arrives Saturday torepresent the climate panel, will accept their Nobel medalsand diplomas at a gala ceremony Monday, followed by aparade and banquet in their honor. On Tuesday, celebrationscontinue with the annual Nobel Peace Prize concert.
