Seoul, November 29, SPA -- The defence ministers of North and South Korea havefailed to agree on conditions for a planned joint fishing zone in theYellow Sea, South Korean media reports said Thursday, citing theSouth Korean delegation in Pyongyang, according to dpa. It was hoped that the first talks in seven years between the twodefence ministers would yield an agreement on a joint fishing zone ontheir disputed border in the Yellow Sea. South Korean Defence Minister Kim Jang Soo said Tuesday that thejoint fishing zone must lie over both sides of their sea border toavoid further conflict in an area that has seen past navalskirmishes. But North Korea demanded that the zone be drawn south of theborder. Reports said Thursday that both sides had however agreed onsecurity guarantees for the execution of other cooperative projects. Details of these were not immediately available. A joint military committee would also be established to carry outfurther confidence-building measures, according to the reports. The issue of the fishing zone would be raised again by high-ranking officers, the reports said. The aim of the three-say discussions is to implementreconciliation and peace-building measures agreed to at lastOctober's summit, which was only the second in the history of twoKoreas.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/504390
