ISLAMABAD, NOVEMBER 16, SPA -- Mohammedmian Soomro, 57, was sworn in as caretaker Prime Minister Friday to supervise the parliamentary elections to be held in the first week of January next year, officials said. President General Pervez Musharraf administered the oath to Soomro at a ceremony at the presidential palace. The outgoing Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, Senators, Supreme Court judges and high-ranking civil and military officials attended it. Members of the caretaker cabinet were also simultaneously sworn in. Soomro is Chairman of the Pakistan Senate (Upper House of Parliament), an office that he would keep after his tenure as interim prime minister would end. He was elected Senate Chairman in March 2003 for a three-year term. He was re-elected to the same office again in 2006. Before that, he served as governor of the Sindh province. Soomro was born on August 19, 1950. He has done Masters in Physics and Operations Management. He had been an international banker and held different positions in Pakistani and foreign banks including Bank of America, International Bank of Yemen, Faisal Islamic Bank of Bahrain, Muslim Commercial Bank of Pakistan, Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan, Federal Bank of Cooperatives and National Bank of Pakistan.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/500241
