Somali police chief survives assassination attempt

MOGADISHU, Somalia, December 25, SPA -- Gunmen threw grenades at the home of the regional police chief in southwestern Somalia, killing two of his grandchildren and a bodyguard, authorities said Tuesday. Seven other family members were wounded in the Mondaynight attack, which police said was a failed assassinationattempt against Gen. Ibrahim Hashi Gabow, the regionalpolice chief based in Baidoa. «They threw hand grenades into the house,» said AdenBid, the commander of Baidoa's police station. «The twochildren died at the hospital, but the bodyguard died onthe spot.» The children were aged 5 and 8, according to a report of the Associated Press.
