Narendra Modi sworn in for third term as head of Gujarat state

AHMADABAD, India, December 25, SPA -- NarendraModi, was sworn in Tuesday for a third term as chief minister in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Thousands of supporters waving saffron flags gathered inan Ahmadabad stadium to watch Modi take the oath of officeafter his Bharatiya Janata Party swept state elections,defeating the Congress party, which heads the federalgovernment. In his election campaign, Modi highlighted the state's economic growth under his leadership _ the state reportedly attracted more than 25 percent of India's total foreign investment of $15.7 billion in the last fiscal year, according to a report of the Associated Press. The BJP, which has been on the wane nationally, securedits traditional stronghold, winning 117 seats in the182-seat state assembly in elections held in two phasesearlier this month.
