United Nations, December 28, SPA -- Condemning the deadly terrorist attack that killed Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and several others in the northern city of Rawalpindi, the U.N. Security Council on Thursday called on all Pakistanis to show restraint following the tragedy. In a statement read to reporters by Ambassador Marcello Spatafora of Italy, which holds the council’s rotating presidency for this month, the 15-member body paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto, the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party and a former prime minister, and called for all those responsible for the suicide attack to be brought to justice. The Security Council called on all Pakistanis “to exercise restraint and maintain stability in the country.” The council statement echoed the condemnation issued earlier Thursday by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who called the assassination of Bhutto “an assault on stability in Pakistan and its democratic process.”--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/512693
