Sudan expels top Canadian, EU diplomat from country

KHARTOUM, August 24, SPA--Sudan expelled the top Canadiandiplomat and the European Commission envoy from the countryfor what was described as «meddling in its affairs,» thestate news agency reported, according to AP. The two diplomats were summoned separately to the foreignministry, which declared each a «persona non grata,» andissued expulsion notes, Ali Al Sadeq, the foreign ministryspokesman, was quoted as saying Thursday by the officialSUNA news agency. «We have received some indications from the Sudanesegovernment that our head of delegation is no longer welcomein Sudan and we are now trying to sort out with theSudanese authorities how we can settle this matter,» saidCommission spokeswoman Antonia Mochan from Brussels onFriday. She confirmed the official concerned is the head of theCommission delegation Kent Degerfelt, who Mochan said was along-serving EU aid official. «At the time when wereceived the letter, he was on holiday and he's still onholiday, so he's not in Sudan.» Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Rodney Mooreidentified the Canadian diplomat as Nuala Lawlor, actingcharge d'affaires. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/477192
