Dhaka, July 09, SPA -- The army-led security forces in Bangladesh rescued a Western aid agency official from captivity in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the south-east of the country bordering Myanmar, officials said Monday. Local sources said Hossain Shahid Sumon, a Bangladeshi working for Danish International Development Agency, was found in a junglehideout Sunday, bringing to a close a fortnight-longsearch-and-rescue operation. Sumon's Bangladeshi driver, Mohammad Hanif, was also abducted on June 25 but released three days later by suspected anti-Myanmar rebels from the remote town of Thanchi. Rescuers used air force helicopters for scanning themalaria-infested foothills of Bandarban district located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, about 350 kilometers south-east of the capital Dhaka. A force of some 1,000 personnel took part in the search for the kidnapped workers, according to a report of DPA news agency. Security forces killed at least one suspected kidnapper in a shootout on July 6, and arrested three others. In Denmark, Development Cooperation Minister Ulla Tornaes said in the statement: "It is with great joy that I received news that both kidnapped Danida (aid) workers, Hossain Shahid Sumon and Muhammed Hanif, are free and can be reunited with their families." The Danish foreign ministry says it still knew no motive for the kidnapping. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/465960
