Lebanese Army continues siege, as heavy artillery is brought in

Nahr al Bared, Lebanon, JUNE 13, SPA -- Cautious calm prevailed Wednesday atthe Nahr al Bared camp after sporadic fighting, as the Lebanese Armyadvanced from the north-east against positions manned by Islamistmilitants at the outskirts of the camp, REPORTED DPA. The southern road to the camp, which had been used by humanitarianagencies to deliver aid, came under sniper fire earlier Wednesday byFatah al-Islam militants who are holed up inside the camp. The army continued to tighten its siege on the camp as Lebanesearmy engineers continued to clear buildings at the outskirts ofpossible booby traps ahead of the troops' advance. The sound of loud explosion could be heard every now and then asthe army blew up booby-trapped positions, witnesses said. According to an army source, the army managed to clear at leasttwo buildings from bombs left behind by the militants. The army source said that the army had taken control of the Nawrascompound, at the northern edge of the camp, where Fatah al-Islammilitants used to meet.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/458458
