5,000 monks protest in Myanmar's biggest city

YANGON, Myanmar, September 23, SPA -- About 5,000 Buddhist monks demonstrated against the military junta in Myanmar'slargest city Sunday, cheered on by as many as 10,000onlookers shouting support for detained democracy leaderAung San Suu Kyi, the Associated Press quoted witnesses as saying. The monks marched from the famous Shwedagon Pagoda to thenearby Sule Pagoda before passing the U.S. Embassy,witnesses said. As they walked, the crowd protected them by forming ahuman chain along the route. It was the sixth straight day monks have marched inYangon, and came a day after they were allowed to marchpast Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Suu Kyi's compound in asymbolic gesture of support.
