UN calls on Taliban to stop attacks on food convoys

KABUL, Afghanistan, October 29, SPA -- The United Nations on Monday said 34 aid workers have been killed in Afghanistan this year and called on Taliban fighters and criminal gangs tostop attacking convoys delivering food. Tom Koenigs, the head of the U.N. Assistance Mission toAfghanistan, also said insurgents and criminal gangs haveabducted 76 aid workers and attacked or looted 55 aidconvoys this year. «Those responsible for these attacks and for theinsecurity are pushing the most vulnerable people outsideof our reach,» he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. «Those responsible for these attacks need to know that they are attacking the welfare of Afghanistan's most vulnerable communities.»--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/494587
