Official: Serbia won't give up Kosovo in exchange for EU membership

BELGRADE, Serbia, August 13, SPA -- Serbia rejects any plan topartition Kosovo, an official said Monday, stressing thatit would never give up the disputed province even if thecost was being denied membership in the European Union, according to The Associated Press. Serb and Kosovo officials will hold the next round oftalks with international envoys Aug. 30 in Vienna, Austria,as part of a 120-day effort to break the impasse overKosovo, an ethnic Albanian negotiator said Monday. Last week, envoys from the U.S., European Union and Russiavisited the region for three days to launch the diplomaticpush after Russia threatened to block a U.N.-negotiatedplan to grant Kosovo internationally supervisedindependence. The EU mediator, German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, saidover the weekend that partitioning the province alongethnic lines was an option if ethnic Albanian and Serbianleaders agreed, and threatened to deny the possibility ofEU membership if the sides failed to compromise. «Serbia won't give up an inch (centimeter) of itsterritory in exchange for membership in any internationalorganization or European integration,» said BranislavRistivojevic, spokesman for the ruling Democratic Party ofSerbia. Leaders in Serbia and Kosovo have said joining the EU isone of their main goals, although the prospect is stillmany years in the future.
