United Nations, September 25, SPA -- United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Tuesday pledged to “leave no stone unturned” in an effort to bring peace to the Sudanese region of Darfur in his opening remarks at the United Nations General Assembly debate.“I will leave no stone unturned to end the crisis in Darfur,” Ban said, adding that the government of Sudan must “live up to its pledge” to allow international peacekeepers into the region.“The crisis in Darfur grew from many causes, any solution must address all of them,” he said. “We must deal with root causes of conflict, however complex and entangled.”Ban also called for a “stronger United Nations,” saying the organization must become “faster, more flexible and mobile.”“We need to pay less attention to rhetoric and more attention to results,” he said. Ahead of the 62nd session of the General Assembly, Ban has participated in high-level meetings on Iraq, Afghanistan and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, all of which he mentioned in his address.“Peace in the Middle East is vital,” he said. ‘We know what is required: An end to violence, an end to occupation, the creation of a Palestinian state in peace with itself and Israel.”“The elements for a renewed push for peace are being brought together,” Ban added. The secretary general also described the situation in Iraq as “the whole world’s problem” and repeated his commitment to increase United Nations involvement in the country, though he emphasized that “the safety and security of UN staff is paramount.”Ban also made reference to demonstrations in Myanmar, also known as Burma, which is expected to feature in an address by U.S. President George W. Bush shortly. The country has seen rare public demonstrations, led by Buddhists monks, against the military government.“We again urge the authorities in Myanmar to exercise utmost restraint,” Ban said, calling on the government to “engage in dialogue with all parties.”The secretary general reiterated his commitment to the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and said “I am confident that we will reach a negotiated solution with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/485818
