ISLAMABAD, September 18, SPA -- President General Pervez Musharraf will leave the position of chief of the Pakistan Army after his election as president for the second time, his principal lawyer Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada told the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday. In a written statement filed with the court, Pirzada said that Musharraf would take oath as civilian president for another five-year term if elected to the office again. The statement said that if elected for a second term as president, Musharraf shall relinquish the charge of chief of army staff soon after election and before taking the oath of president for the second term. Pirzada read out the statement to a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court that is hearing six identical petitions against Musharraf's simultaneous holding of the offices of the president and the Pakistan army chief. Officials said that the presidential election was due to take place between September 15 and October 15, 2007 under Pakistan's Constitution. Musharraf s current term as president expires on November 15 this year.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/483655
