Aziz says ISLAMABAD, JUNE 10, SPA -- Pakistan's prime minister saidSunday in an Associated Press interview he expectsPresident Pervez Musharraf to secure another five years inoffice. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz projected an air of confidencefor the government and Musharraf's leadership, playing downsigns of a spread in Islamic extremism in the country andpredicting this will be the first parliament in Pakistan'shistory to finish its full five-year term. Aziz said the country has been going through a period ofeconomic growth and now has record reserves of US$15billion (¤11.2 billion). «The whole nation hopes, and I'm sure President Musharrafwants, to stand for re-election. We are very sure he willcontest and he will be elected for another term,» saidAziz. In the interview, Aziz went out of his way to defend thegovernment . «We believe in freedom of the press. The government isvery much at peace with itself so if people criticize us wewelcome it as long as there is a code of conduct and normsof fair reporting are followed,» he said, but added theinstitution of the army should be spared unfair attacks.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/457630
