Russia calls for real discussion on Kosovo's political future

New York, May 2, SPA - Russia on Wednesday called on the United NationsSecurity Council to hold "real discussion" on the future of Kosovofollowing the council's visits to Belgrade and Pristina to gainfirst-hand but opposing views of the area, according to dpa. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was one of 15 councilmembers who held talks in Belgrade, Pristina, Brussels and Vienna onwhat the council should do to settle debate about Kosovo, where theAlbanian majority demands independence. Belgrade, backed by Moscow, has rejected a UN plan to grant Kosovoindependence under international supervision. "It was a good programme, carefully prepared and we saw Serbsliving with Albanians in the same village where they complain aboutconstant fear and intimidation," Churkin said of the council's visitlast week in Kosovo. "Fortunately, in the past months, there has been no graphic anddramatic developments there," he said.
