GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip, April 23, SPA -- The top Palestinian security official submitted his resignation during a Cabinet meeting Monday, but the prime minister refused to accept it, senior government officials said. Interior Minister Hani Kawasmeh informed the Cabinet he wanted to step down, according to Mohammed Madhoun, a top aide to Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh refused to accept the resignation, Madhoun was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. Kawasmeh had threatened to resign because of lack ofprogress in reforming the security forces. Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved a plan proposed by Kawasmeh to reform the security forces in the Palestinian territories. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/443542
