Malaysian FM vows to expand trade, tourism links with China

Beijing, JULY 12, SPA -- Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar onThursday told Chinese leaders he wanted to expand cooperation intrade, tourism, education and other fields, as his country seeks tonarrow an investment gap with China, reported dpa. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told Syed that the twonations had "strengthened political trust and achieved remarkableprogress in trade cooperation" in recent years, state media said. They had already expanded exchanges in defence, education,technology and personnel, and China wanted to "actively facilitatebilateral strategic cooperation," the official Xinhua news agencyquoted Yang as saying. Syed said his government also wanted to promote cooperation withChina in political and economic fields as well as international andregional issues, the agency reported. He said Malaysia would adhere to the "one China" policy, whichprecludes formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and opposed theTaiwanese government's attempt to join the United Nations or hold areferendum on its UN membership. Syed also met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday, during afour-day visit to China that was scheduled to end on Friday. The visit followed a call last week by Malaysian Prime MinisterAbdullah Ahmad Badawi for more Chinese investment. Chinese direct investment in Malaysia was valued at less than 30million dollars, compared with 320 million dollars of Malaysianinvestment in China, Xinhua quoted Badawi as saying in a speech atthe Malaysia-China Business Forum in the southern Malaysian state ofJohor. "Given our strong and long-serving diplomatic ties, I believe thatit is only natural for Malaysia and China to be able to enhanceexisting trade, business and investment cooperation," Badawi said.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/466860
