London, OCT 22, SPA -- Britain will limit the number of workers allowed infrom Bulgaria and Romania when these two become European Unionmembers in January, DPA QUOTED press reports as saying Sunday. The government would allow in only specialised workers, and wouldlimit their stay by issuing temporary work permits, according toreports in The Sunday Times and The Observer. They said the government was alarmed at the numbers of EastEuropeans - above all, Poles - who had arrived in Britain since theEU's 2004 "big bang" expansion. Ten mainly Eastern European nations joined then, and Britain wasone of the few countries offering unlimited access to workers fromthese countries. Unofficial figures put these at some 400,000. New studies have shown that 80 per cent of these new workers wereearning little more than the official minimum wage of 7.90 euros anhour.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/397548
