Pakistan's PM says Afghan refugees must return home

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Jan 30, SPA -- Pakistan's Prime Minister appealed to the European Union on Tuesday to help repatriate some 3 million Afghan refugees. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said his government plans to restrict the cross-border movement of people. «We want to restrict movement of people across theborder. We want the refugees to go gradually back home to Afghanistan,» he said during a visit to Brussels for talksat EU and NATO headquarters. «These 3 million people ... have to live in betterconditions and that is where the EU and the rest of theworld can help resettle people,» Aziz told the EuropeanParliament's foreign affairs committee. «The return ofrefugees is critical to controlling terrorism in theregion.» The EU provides some ¤50 million (US$65 million) in aid to Pakistan annually. Aziz welcomed the aid, but said trade with the EU was more important for Pakistan, and called for more access of Pakistani goods to the European market. The annual volume of trade between Pakistan and theEuropean Union is some ¤7 billion (US$9 billion). --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/421790
