EU appeals to Iraqi religious, tribal leaders to stop cycle

of violence BRUSSELS, Belgium, Nov 24, SPA -- European Union External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner appealed to Iraqi religious and tribal leaders Friday to call on their supporters to stop retaliatory attacks after more than 200 people died in bombings in Baghdad's Sadr City. «I appeal to all political, religious and tribal leadersto call on their supporters to refrain from retaliation andrevenge,» Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement. «Violencefeeds on violence, the perpetrators are achieving nothing for themselves or their people, only breeding further misery.» Two bombs exploded in northern Iraq on Friday, killing at least 22 people. EU spokeswoman Emma Udwin told reporters that the 25-nation bloc «strongly condemns» the escalatedsectarian violence in Iraq and also reiterated Europeancalls on Syria and Iran to play a bigger role in trying tostabilize Iraq. «Since 2003 we have always stressed that Iraq's neighbors do have a role to play in the stabilization of the country, and we do rely on these neighbors to play a constructive role,» Udwin was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/405794
