United Nations, OCT 27, SPA -- A European-written drat resolution presented to the U.N. Security Council this week details weapons and trade sanctions to be imposed on Iran for its defiance of a U.N. deadline to halt uranium enrichment. Iran has not established full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities as set out in Resolution 1696, according to the draft, a copy of which was obtained by S.P.A. The draft discusses the possibility of further sanctions if Iran does not comply with U.N. demands, but notes that further decisions will be required should such additional measures be necessary. The seven-page draft creates a special Committee of the Security Council, comprised of all 15 members, to gather information on any assistance U.N. member states have given to Iran, examine any requests for sanctions exemptions, outline what additional items could be used in nuclear activity, and order a report every three months on how the council could better impose sanctions on Iran. The draft also says that Iran s nuclear activities shall be kept under continuous review. The draft details sanctions exemptions regarding the Russian-made Bushehr civil nuclear power plant in Iran. The sanctions measures shall not apply to funds, other financial assets, or economic resources payable to the Russian Federation by Iran, related to the construction of Bushehr, it said. Russian officials in Moscow have said they are not happy with the draft resolution, believing that it differs from previous agreements. The five permanent Security Council members the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia plus Germany will meet in New York City late Thursday to discuss the draft.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/398385
