LONDON, Jan 11, SPA -- Britain has no intention of sending additional soldiers to Iraq, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said Thursday. Beckett welcomed U.S. President George W. Bush'sannouncement that Washington would send 21,500 more troops to Iraq, saying it demonstrates the U.S. and Iraqigovernments' determination to deal with the deterioratingsecurity situation. However, Beckett distanced the British government from U.S. policy in Iraq. «It is not our intention at the present time to send moretroops,» Beckett told reporters at Downing Street. «It has always been the case that we will make our ownjudgments and our own decisions depending on that series and sequence of events,» she was quoted as saying by the associated Press. She said Britain was continuing to work «progressively» toward handing over security responsibility to Iraqis in Basra in southern Iraq, where it has about 7,000 troops.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/417217
