US official arrives unexpectedly in Beirut

Beirut, AUG 9, SPA -- US special envoy to the Middle East David Welcharrived unexpectedly in Beirut Wednesday for talks with Lebaneseofficials, DPA quoted Lebanese official sources as saying. "The US envoy will discuss a possible revised UN draft resolutionto end the violence in Lebanon," the sources said. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora told reporters after themeeting that "nothing new has developed. There is no progress up tillnow." "I do not expect a UN resolution to end the violence today ortomorrow. There are still obstacles, and we are working towardsfinding a solution," Seniora told reporters. Lebanon rejected a UN draft resolution to end the violence, andis insisting on an Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanese territoriesto go along with a ceasefire. The Lebanese decided late Monday to send some 15,000 Lebanese armytroops to southern Lebanon to secure the borders with Israel.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/381763
