12 Tamil rebels, 3 Sri Lankan policemen die in attacks

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Sept 30, SPA -- Twelve Tamil Tiger rebels died in an unsuccessful attempt to attack an elite police force camp in eastern Sri Lanka on Saturday, while three policemen were killed in a separate bomb explosion, the military said. A group of guerrillas tried to attack the Special TaskForce camp in Pullumalai in eastern Ampara district, andthe police retaliated, killing 12 rebels, the Media Centerfor National Security said. The police suffered no casualties, the media center said. The report could not be verified independently. Ampara is 220 kilometers (130 miles) east of capital,Colombo. Three policemen were also killed in a bomb explosion inthe northwestern Mannar district, the media center said. The fighting took place as Norwegian envoy JonHanssen-Bauer prepared to visit Sri Lanka on Monday fortalks with government and Tamil Tiger leaders on the statusof the peace process, the Associated Press reported.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/393169
